My Story
I am a 40something mother of two teenage sons. Weight has always been a problem for me but I could easily say it wasn't my fault in the beginning. Shortly after I was born it was discovered I had grand mal epilepsy and at the time no one in the area knew how to effectively treat it. So I grew up sheltered by my parents and not allowed to be active like the other children in case a seizure would take place for no apparent reason. Food was one of the comforts both at home and at my grandparents houses. It didn't help that I had two grandmothers and 3 great-grandmothers. Then when I was a teenager, food became off-limits as my weight ballooned. This made me want the goodies all the more. In high school my weight reached 155 which isn't good for someone less than 5 feet tall. For a short period of time the doctors had me on amphetamines to try to make me lose the weight. This caused all sorts of unexpected problems. I have been on every realistic diet imaginable. After I was married 20+ yrs. ago my weight was 170 which wasn't bad considering, but 2 pregnancies and all the stress later I got over 200lbs. WAY OVER. My husband had no problem with my weight, but I became extremely uncomfortable in my clothes and in my skin. I soon saw in the local paper an add for the Weight Management Class at the local Curves and figured it couldn't be any worse than anything I had done before and it was FREE. Not many programs can say that. So I got my husband to agree to drive me and I came to understand and enjoy the classes. I soon began the exercise program and have been loyally attending since Feb. of this year. I have lost almost 20lb. and have much farther to go, but the satisfaction of knowing I can do it and will continue is worth all the effort it is taking to get there. I have gone to another Weight Management Class offered later this spring just to brush up and see if anything had changed and this has given me more determination to see things through to the end.
