My Story
When I first joined Curves on December 29, 2006,at the age of 30, I had been walking on a cane for a year, due to an injury that had caused me to be permanently handicapped. As the mom of a special needs child with Cystic Fibrosis, I needed to lose the weight not only to be able to help take care of my child better, but also for myself...my health literally depended on it. I walked in that day, weighing 306 pounds, wearing tight size 28 clothes, and having a BMI of 48.6%. I set my goal the day I joined at 140 pounds. I realized I had a problem, but it took almost two more years, March 2008, before I started getting serious about my problem, and my walking was deteriorating more by that point, to the point I could only walk 1/4 of a mile, before I felt I could walk no farther, and my leg was in constant pain. I weighed 301 pounds. Being a middle school vocal music teacher to almost 600 kids each week, I realized I needed to get in better shape, not only for my family, and myself, but also to be able to better share my talent with others.
I made a commitment to myself that month to begin working out at Curves 5 days a week, rain or shine. I followed through with my commitment the first month, and realized that I was beginning to see changes in my weight and measurements as a result of my new journey. Over the next year, the little changes added up to big changes in my life. I was able to do new things, like jog for the first time, and had plenty of extra energy every day after teaching middle school music each day, to play with my daughter, and started cooking supper at home, instead of eating fast food all the time. Losing the weight has made my personal life happier, and healthier, and my home life better as well.
Today, my family tells me that I don't even look like the same person anymore, and I certainly don't feel like the same person at all. I was able to quit using a cane in May 2008, and haven't had to use one to walk since that time. I can now jog 6 miles a day, and walk 3 miles most days, in addition to my wonderful first love, Curves. :)
I recently became the first member at the Picayune Curves to reach their goal, since the branch opened 5 years ago.
I made goal at Curves on June 1, 2009, weighing 136 pounds, and now wear size 6 clothing! I have lost a total of 170 pounds, a grand total of 112 inches, and my BMI is now 24.2%!
Today...I feel as though I have already won this contest, because I have won the greatest contest of all...a chance to live life to the fullest! :)
