HELP CONQUER CANCER BY VOTING FOR ME!!!
In early 2006, facing the breakdown of my marriage and working in a stressful job, I had stopped exercising, stopped socializing, and seemed to eat everything in sight from the vantage point of my living room couch. I was unhappy with life and definitely unhappy with my body. My mom been going to Curves and telling me about it for quite some time. Then another friend told me about her Curves experience and I figured it might be a great way to get started at exercising again. My motives were to get back in shape, to improve my overall health and mental health and to get myself out of the house. I loved the welcoming and non-threatening nature of Curves and soon found myself one of the "family" with our local morning Curves crew. What I didn't realize was how far those first few steps would take me and how important my Curves cheerleaders would become!
A year later, I was on my own, 20 pounds lighter, and loving my daily exercise routine. I decided to join another gym as well and get back into spinning classes which I hadn't done for years. Based on past experiences, I headed to my first spin class, sure that I'd be gasping for air minutes into the class. I was pleasantly surprised to complete the class with relative ease based on the fitness level I had already achieved at Curves. Soon I was spinning regularly and feeling even better about myself.
A year later, with my mom battling breast cancer (as another AMAZING Curves Gal it is important to note she still did most of her morning Curves workouts during 3 of her 4 months of chemo!!), I saw a poster in spin class advertising the 2008 Ride to Conquer Cancer - a two day event where participants cycle from Toronto to Niagara Falls - an incredible 211 km journey. I knew what I had to do and I registered for the event and increased my spinning to several times a week. Come the spring of 2008, I started cycling outside with my fellow rider (also a Curves member) and soon we were up to 40 km per ride, then 60, then 80 and finally we did two back to back 100 km rides before the big Ride weekend. In June 2008, we succesfully completed the Ride to Conquer Cancer, cheered on by our Curves Morning Crew! It was so amazing that we quickly registered to do it again in 2009. Feeling almost invincible now, a mere four days after the 2008 Ride, I participated in a mini-triathalon event - swimming 100 m, running 3 km, and cycling 12 km. Who would have thought that in a few short years, I would go from couch potato to athlete! I've never been particularly athletically inclined, but Curves got me started back on the path and starting to search for new adventures.
My fitness adventures have continued this year, completing two 6 week fitness boot camps and just this June, I completed the 211 km Ride to Conquer Cancer from Toronto to Niagara Falls for a second time with my also Amazing Curves riding partner, Judy!!! It was an amazing experience, and our Curves crew was waiting at the finish!
You can still find me at Curves most mornings - I just earned my 700 workouts Tshirt in May. My extended Curves family has been such a joy and so much fun as I've gotten used to being on my own again. They're amazing women who've lead amazing lives and who never cease to inspire me - even if keeping you on track is like herding cats! Thanks gals!!
Please consider voting for me and voting often!! If I win, the $1000 prize will go towards the $5000 in fundraising that Judy and I have to achieve for next summer's Ride to Conquer Cancer! Anyone can vote too - they do not have to be Curves members so please forward this website to all your family, friends and colleagues and ask them to vote too!
