My Story
My name is Virginia. I'm 55 years old, born and raised in Benton, Arkansas. I have been overweight ALL my life (at birth weighing over 12 pounds). I have tried all kinds of diets: food diets, soup diets, supplement diets, pills (legal and not). I started smoking after high school and was still overweight. My highest weight was 344 pounds. I was never much for exercise. I had too many excuses: zero time, too tired, too hot, too cold, too rainy, too expensive, too pessimistic, stressed, and depressed. I could go on and on, but after getting to the point of it being painful to walk, stand, step up and down on stairs or even a curb, I wanted a change. It was hard to breathe with any exertion. I had problems with sleepless nights, being tired all the time, having to go to work, doing any house work, and forget anything extra like something outdoors - walking, gardening, fishing. It was not going to happen. Then, I saw an ad: Curves - 30 days, $30 and thought why not. Still in the back of my mind, I thought, "What is 30 seconds on a machine and going around the circuit 2 times going to do?" Well, after about 7 weeks, 15 inches, and 8 pounds later, I feel better than I have in years. My husband first noticed my gait and ability to step up and down easier with less pain. People at work started asking what I was doing. I looked different, acted different, I could breathe easier, and I didn't look so tired all the time. Curves has been motivating, stress relieving, energizing, and fun. I look forward to going to Curves. Before the 30 days was up, I was planning how to make that first 12 month commitment. Things I noticed besides feeling better, more energy, and being less tired are my nails are growing, my hair falls out less, I can take a shower and get dresses without being exhausted, I don't fall asleep in my chair as soon as I get home, and I can bend over and tie my shoes. The ladies at Curves are wonderful, inspiring, encouraging, friendly, and no one looks at you "funny". For anyone who thinks they will never think of exercise and fun in the same sentence, think Curves. It's not just a diet or exercise program. It's a life change you can live with. I talk about Curves all the time. It's just that when I find a good thing, I like to share it. Some of my friends have come to see for themselves and some need a little more persuasion. Thanks Curves, and thanks to whoever called me back when I almost didn't come because I didn't think I could afford it. Leaving off the 1-2 sodas a day pays the monthly fee, and a little each pay day for 30 days took care of the sign up. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Addendum: My house is still a mess. Oh well - one step at a time.
