My Story
I have been overweight my whole life. I graduated high school at a 180lbs, and my top weight was almost 400lbs.
I have tried many times over the years to lose the weight. Every time I started doing well something would happen in life and I would start to put the weight back on. In July of 2007 I fell at work and damaged my knee. The doctors said I would need surgery. The pain made it impossible for me to do any excercise, and my weight started to go back up. I knew I needed to lose weight to take the pressure off my knee, but when you can hardly move it is very hard to lose weight. I was getting ready for surgery when I was in a car accident. My van rolled over three times, and even though I had my seatbelt on I was thrown from the vehicle. Laying in the emergency room with a broken neck, collarbone, and left shoulder, the one thing I remember very well was the humiliation I felt. They had to cut off my clothes, and take xrays. Laying there exposed to about 10 people was the most embarrassing thing I have been through in my life. Then the Dr said they couldn't get good xrays because of my obesity.
I have been down the long road of recovery from both the accident and my knee surgery. I still live with pain, but determined to take advantage of the opportunity that God gave me. It was a miricle that I lived and I'm not paralyzed.
In March this year my mom asked me to join Curves with her. I was happy to find out that my daughter could also be a member. As a family, we have dedicated ourselves to the weight management program and the 30 minute workout. At my first weigh-in I lost 4 1/2 inches and 4 1/2 pounds. It was enough to show me I could do this. The staff has been very supportive and motivating, helping us to stay on track.
Right now we are playing Camp Curves, and I look forward to coming in each day to see how my cabin is doing. We laugh and have a great time with the other ladies. Who knew that working out and losing weight could be so much fun.
