My Story
Exercise is incredible! Little did I realize how important it would be until I was in a car accident just a couple blocks away from home. One day I was independent, going for power walks and the next day I couldn't even make a sandwich for myself. The pain was unconscionable.
I was diagnosed with severe soft tissue damage. The specialist told me "on a scale of 1 to 10; 10 being a paraplegic," I was an 8 only because I didn't have to have surgery to reattach my torn muscles. She went on to explain that if you took a plastic garbage bag, stretched it and stretched it some more how it becomes misshapen and has multiple tears. She said that was what had happened inside my torso. Also I was told to expect arthritis to set in because of the damage to the soft tissues.
The specialist said I must exercise and do stretches for the rest of my life or pay the consequences of frozen muscles and becoming decrepit. The specialist explained if you exercise on a regular basis you will continue to build muscle and flexibility despite the injuries. (In my case I must exercise through the pain because not exercising will be worse.)
A few years later Curves for Women opened in my area. A friend had been hired to work there. I asked her about Curves but was a little skeptical. How could I get a complete workout in 1/2 hour? She talked me in to stopping by for a trial on the circuit. I joined Curves on Nov. 28, 2001.
I had always wished for an affordable way to exercise without having to spend hours at it; a way to exercise that would tone my body the way God designed me to be. Curves is that answer. It's a wonderful way to maintain both physical and mental balance. Now I am very toned, I have no arthritis, I stand straight and the chronic pain continues to decrease each year. I take only organic herbs and vitamins and on very rare occasions a little ibuprofen.
I am embarking on a new adventure by pursuing my artistic talent of painting. While building that business up I am also holding down two very physical jobs: one at a big box hardware store and one as a waitress. In between I even have the energy to be involved in community theatrical productions. People wonder how I do it? The answer they get is, "I exercise at Curves!"
