My Story
As women, we're all told to be humble, so it's hard to actually talk about how AMAZING I am, but here goes...
As an adult, I've gained a good bit of weight. Over 100 pounds, actually. And I've never really enjoyed exercising. The most success I had was while working with a personal trainer a few years back, but it was just too expensive to keep paying him. I gradually put on the 40 or so pounds I had lost.
I'd heard great things about Curves, but there was not a club close to my home. I continued half-hearted efforts at exercise, but felt overwhelmed. I had become accustomed to spinning my wheels. Then on May 31, 2007, I saw a Curves sign at an intersection in my neighborhood. This was the sign I'd been waiting for! I immediately drove to the club and met the owner, Ellen. She was very friendly and not intimidating at all. She gave me a quick tour and explained how the circuit worked. I immediately joined and did my very first workout that day. It wasn't long until I began to see results, and not just inches or pounds lost, although that was encouraging. I began to feel more energetic and my clothes were beginning to fit differently.
My progress has been slow but steady... Over the last two years, I've lost about 15 pounds and 25 inches overall, which doesn't sound like much. But I keep plugging away, encouraged that I am healthier each day I make conscious decisions about my body. There have been some obstacles along the way. I broke my wrist in 2008 & had corrective surgery which kept me off the circuit for about three months. A few months later, I had another surgical procedure that kept me out for another month or so. But each time, I knew that I could come back to Curves and pick up where I left off.
Something else happened... something I didn't expect. I enjoyed getting to know the ladies I met at Curves. Not just Ellen & her wonderful staff, but the other women working the circuit. Some younger than me and some older. Some with children and others without. Ladies from different social & religious backgrounds. When we walk through that door, we are all the same and have a common goal: to take control of our health. Each woman is inspiring in her own way and I've leared so much from working the circuit with each of them. I am especially inspired by the older ladies. I think every woman who makes the decision to take control of her health is AMAZING. Each woman there is a reminder to me that I CAN DO THIS!
