My Story
I lived many unhealthy years putting everyones needs ahead of my own. Because of my size and slowness, I wasnt able to participate in many family activities. I missed bike riding, boat riding, trips to the beach, park, and zoo, and used the excuse of the kids having time with Dad.
I knew that I needed to be healthier, but was afraid of yo-yo dieting and being embarrassed by looks of others. I was just afraid of failure and used the excuse that it was better for my health to remain big instead of losing and gaining.
My attitude began to change in the Christmas season of 2003 when I saw a friend that I hadn't seen in a while. She was briskly walking in the parade with other Curves divas and ran to give me a coupon for a free week at Curves.
So, in January, with a friend in tow and a skeptical mind, I visited Curves and was greeted warmly by the staff. Robin answered all my questions and I was impressed with what I saw. I went home to think and pray for a night and registered the next day.
I had no idea how much I wanted to lose. I just knew that I needed to be healthier so that I could enjoy life more. I always looked forward to Curves, where the atmosphere was happy and encouraging. I especially liked reading the Bible verse in the corner and the positive statements on the walls.
Because of "busy times," I quit exercising a few months. I made myself weigh in August and was shocked to see 258. My daughter, Emily, was a great encourager and joined Curves, too. We began going almost every day.
We enjoyed the staff and others and I was finally ready to take the final step in October. Emily's friends' mom had lost a great deal of weight and he shared what she had done and even told Emily that I could be "some hot mama" if I lost some. Those words and Emily's encouragement to keep coming to Curves were just what I needed.
I cut down on fat and bread, and added lots of protein, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and water. I still had my coffee and occasional treats, but ate smaller amounts and kept coming to Curves.
In a few months, others started noticing that my clothes were hanging, and that inspired me more. It took 1 1/2 years to lose 130 lbs, but it's gone and life has been wonderful!
Others that I haven't seen in a while don't recognize me. I got quite a boost when my siblings saw me, since I was always the biggest one for the past 20 years. When we went to Six Flags, I rode everything and didn't stop smiling for quite a while! It was great to not worry about the fit!
I try not to take any day for granted and am so thankful for family, friends, and Curves.
