My Story
I have been working out at Curves since July 7, 2003. I recently obtained my 400th workout t-shirt! Though others have surpassed that milestone much quicker that I have, there aren't t-shirts or awards for most babies born since joining Curves. If there were, I think I would win hands down at my club! My eldest daughter was almost 1 when I joined and since then I have had 3 more babies.
I manage to work out 2-3 times/week in the mornings before my husband goes to work. And if my timing is good, I can get a quick trip to the grocery store in as well! So often before many people have really opened their eyes in the morning, I have showered, dressed, put my make-up on, nursed the baby, worked out and maybe even grocery shopped!
Working out at Curves has been great for me in many ways. It gives me some sort of structure for getting exercise, which is easy to put off with so many other responsibilities. I don't have to think hard about it, but can work hard while there. It also gives me a mental break as well as social time with other women. On top of staying home with the 4 children, I also home-school the older 2 so life is really busy. I am drained at the end of the day.
I was fairly active during high-school and university but not so much since getting married and having children. Before Curves I was lacking in physical exercise opportunities. I have the most energy when I am working out at Curves regularly and eating well. It is amazing what a difference that makes not only for me but my whole family. It is incredibly difficult to find the time in my busy life, but I know that my quality of life is so much better when I am getting my work outs in.
It's can get very cold here in Ottawa during the winters as well. That makes getting out with 4 children very challenging. So having a place where I know I can go to get exercise is very important. I have also had the confidence to start playing basketball again with a bunch of friends in a women's league. Between that and Curves I feel good.
What is also exciting for me is that my children get to see me living an active life. They know that their mummy goes to the gym and plays basketball and studies have shown that if children see their parents being active, they are more likely to be active as well. So I like to think that I am setting a good example for my own children as well!
