My Story
At the end of July 2008, I had just turned 49 and I was frustrated once again with myself. I was taking two kinds of blood pressure medicine, the Doctor was concerned about my becoming pre-diabetic, and that I may have to start taking medication for cholesterol. Needless to say, I was a medical disaster and if I stayed on this path I would probably continue to gain weight, because when I am upset or stressed, I eat. I had thought about working out and had tried walking, work out tapes, etc nothing worked for long. I had heard about CURVES and was pleased about it being all women.
The first time I visited I was embarassed because I got a little lightheaded from working out to hard, but Lisa was very helpful and made me realize I was dehydrated. She made sure I did the stretching at the end and explained why it was so important. After the first week I couldn't believe that I didn't hurt everywhere. My usual pattern was to work too hard, hurt to much and then give up. By listening to the trainers and following their advise I was feeling good about what I was doing. I trusted them once again by agreeing to be weighed and measured (something I dreaded!)
Once I started, I made a commitment to myself that I deserved the time to take care of me and wrote my workouts on the calendar just like any other important appointment. I began to meet new friends and looking forward to my workout time. During the first three months, I became frustrated with myself once again. I was watching the scale and did not see much progress. If I had followed my normal pattern I would have given up once again. BUT, with the help of the CURVES trainers and the measuring they were able to help me see that the inches were coming down. They encouraged me all along the way and told me to trust in the system and the scale would soon show results.
I am happy to say, I did not give up and I trusted in the CURVES system. During the beginning I did not adjust my eating habits, but with the increased excercise I was able to begin to lose inches and then weight. As my activity increased I began to see my eating habits change on their own. As the months passed and the results began to show, I was slowly able to work on my eating habits as well. I have had a complete physical and the Doctor could not believe the changes in my blood pressure, cholesterol, and tri-glycerides. I am only taking one medication now and hope to be off it soon.
One other thing I did during this time is to ask God into the process with me by saying this prayer everyday, "Heavenly Father, please help me to continue working out so that I can become the image that you have for me instead of this one I have created for myself." It amazes me everyday but God is changing me in other ways that I never imagined.
It have been 20 months since I began this CURVES life changing experience. I have dropped from a size 24 to a 16, I have lots of new friends at CURVES, and a wonderful new wardrobe. I really enjoy the CURVES workout, the people and the new person that I am becoming. You notice I said becoming, I will be attending CURVES for the rest of my life and who knows what I will look like in 20 more months. Please join me on the journey, I'd love to meet another new friend at CURVES.
